Amongst the most mysterious and horrific of the creatures spawned in the First Age are the aquatic creatures known as the Illycris. They are named from a root word in the Old Tongue meaning “needle-fish”, but are rarely referred to as such. Sailors, who have more reason than most to encounter them tend to refer to them as “Waverippers” or “Drowners”.
From all accounts it seems that the Illycris are humanoid from the waist up, with eel-like lower bodies. They are said to have ranks of transparent teeth and large luminescent eyes, webbed fingers and to swim with the grace of sharks.
They wield spears, swords and even shields crafted from shells and the bones of sea monsters, but aside from brief glimpses of them above water no-one has ever been able to discern anything more about them. Although encounters are rare they rarely end well, but since the only stories that tell anything specific about these creatures are rumours circulated amongst mariners it might be said that we know next to nothing for sure.
